The toilet seat and lid should be in the down position when not in use. It keeps the dog and children from drinking out of the basin, prevents errant juggling balls from landing in the water, and most importantly it is hygienic.
Ladies - The lid must be lifted to access the seat. Please don't be so selfish as to want everyone to leave the toilet ready for your use. After use lower the lid.
Men - The lid and the seat should be lifted. No marksmanship games at this point - just pee in the water within the toilet. If you make a mess with bad aim or you are a dribbler, clean it up. After use lower the seat and lid.
Don't forget to flush - after closing the lid.
